Thanks, glad you will be reading regularly. I need to drop Roy a note, this must be a difficult time for him and his family. If anyone would like to write to Roy his address is:

Roy Silas Shelburne
12355084
FPC Manchester M-A
PO Box 4000
Manchester, Ky 40962

Emergency Dental

It is very shocking that government has acted so harshly towards Roy and his family.

Will Hobbs

Hobbs,
Are you people serious? This guy was pulling teeth of kids that didnt need it and putting money in other states under different names. What is shocking is that you would defend someone like this...not to mention his son who was trying to make fun of farmers and mechanics on the jury. Come on and get a clue for once.

Hi Hobbs, I wrote this post after reading what I could find in the newspapers in that area and after corresponding with Dr. Shelbourne. I'm not an investigative reporter, but it did sound like Dr. Shelbourne and his family were treated harshly. I did not see any real evidence in the reports that Dr. Shelbourne had treated children harshly. I did see one report in which an assistant said she didn't see any decay. Since assistants are not allowed to diagnose, I felt that her testimony regarding the presence of decay was unusual. At this point, it seems that Dr. Shelbourne has lost his profession and his way of life. From what I understand his son is now the dentist in the practice so I have to think that people have trust in him. We may never know what really happened or how much was true, but at some point we have to say enough is enough. It's very easy to take a little bit of truth and inflate and distort it into a horror story. Dr. Shelbourne admitted that some billing errors occured. In a dental practice, we depend on staff to handle that correctly. There is room for error when humans are involved. From what I know, it sounds more like these errors were escalated into intent. I, and no other dentist or dental professional that I know, would condone mistreatment of children or any patient, and from what I've heard from Dr. Shelbourne, it was not his intent to maltreat anyone. Medicaid itself did it's own investigation and found no irregularities. I have personally seen children who have gone without good dental care or who have been allowed to have their teeth decay due to poor dietary choices and lack of home care. It could make you cry to see a 12 year old with decay in a permanent tooth so severe that their is no other choice except to extract or do a root canal. Seeing the rampant decay caused by constant drinking of soft drinks makes one wonder about the fact that the child was allowed to get into such a dire condition. There is more than enough blame to go around, but when you drive professionals away from extending care to these children, you take away one more person who could help. It seems that there was only one version presented in this story and the reality was glossed over. That's why I posted Dr. Shelbourne's story.

If you had a clue you would have notice that he was charged with upcoding of $8000 in 5 years. Out of millions of dollars that went through Dr. Shelburne's office $8000 was so called "dirty money". I live in the same county as Dr. Shelburne. It is a very poor county that many families live below poverty line. Do you believe these families have good dental hygiene? Chances are he had to do painful procedures not because he wanted to be mean to the children, but because of their dental hygiene. And for Ross putting down Mechanics and Farmers, you really need to get a clue. The Shelburne family are known for being farmers and mechanics. I know for a fact that 2 out of 3 of Ross's uncles are mechanics/farmers. They are also known for their Shelburne Tobacco Warehouse, which this might come to as a shock to you, is for FARMERS!!! So please get a clue!!!
