There have been so many disturbing events happening in the world lately that it can be hard to remember sometimes that in many ways it really is a wonderful world. Atrocities can divert our focus and make us believe that it's hopeless to think that we can have an impact against such monumental horror.
Singly, that might be true. One person alone can't make the whole world change. It's the chain of events that one person can put in motion that can have a big effect. Those of us who work in health care have an advantage. We get to affect many people every day. They in turn go on to affect everyone they encounter. So, you have a responsibility to choose wisely. The important choice that you have to make is about what you will choose to see. Will you see the goodness that is around you in others and in the world, or will you see the negativity? Will you believe in others and in their goodness or will you question the motives behind every kind deed or sincere expression?
Start with how you treat and react to your co-workers. Always expect the best and try to find it in them. You may be surprised at how much goodness there really is. Don't be cynical toward them. People can become so defensive if they've been hurt that they mistrust friendship when it is offered and suspect that a compliment may be setting them up to be taken for a fool. Don't fall into that thinking. Relax into trust. Go along and help others reach goals and perform well. Let them know how good you feel about them.
Bring that goodness and belief to your patients. Treat them lovingly and sincerely. That is how you have an impact on the world. Choose to see the goodness that is in them and all around you. Create more of it. It really is a beautiful world and there are many wonderful people in it. Pay attention to the courage in young children. See the humor and experience in your elderly patients. Have fun with the people you work with and the patients you see and let them know that you care about them and appreciate them. Pass up the opportunity to criticize and make the most of every chance to show gratitude or give praise. Keep making it an even more wonderful world.
